about
"Sand" is written for the theatre play; 9,6 (een verweer) a monologue written by Stijn Devillé (Het Nieuwstedelijk) with a solo performance by Sara Vertongen.
"In times of tangible climate collapse while policy stagnates, simultaneous flooding and draughts, after years of joining protests of Youth for Climate and other climate coalition movements, entering into blockades, and getting arrested with XR (which I will continue to do), I wanted to find other ways to articulate my grief and fear for the future but also how there is hope to be found in taking action. As I am a theatre maker the logical thing seemed to make a performance about these emotions.
What we came up with is called 9.6 something between a monologue, a spoken word performance, and a rock concert. (9.6 billion is the projected number of humans on earth in 2050).
9.6 is a solo performance piece, with words rhythmically spoken /shouted and sung on a live soundtrack by musician Bert Hornickx. The defining stage presence is a huge LED video wall of 4 by 3 meters which looms over me changing colour and intensity and interacting with my words (video work by pioneering Belgian video artist Walter Verdin)."
lyrics
“ Sand ” featuring Sara Vertongen.
If I could fly
If I could fly
Oh. All the money in the world I would give it away
What are we doing in the winter
It’s cold and we have no wings to fly away to the sun
Moon in the sky, what do you think when you see us crawl
Moon in the sky, what do you think when you see us
A simple heap of sand
Contains billions of grains
Take a single grain away
That pile is no less sand
Is always still a heap
Remove another grain
Another
Do that over and over again
The mound is still a mound
'Till suddenly it ain't
Be that grain, be that grain
Be that single grain of sand
Do you see where we start
This grain of sand is your home now.
Oh. All the money in the world I would give it away
What are we doing in the summer
It’s cold and the snow is falling down in May
I hold you
Close to my heart
And then came the heatwaves
And then came the draught
The flames
The fire
And then people died
And then came the water
That washed away towns
And flooded the land and
People waded the streets
Through the kneehigh water
The groin-high water
The belly-high tide
And later on the chest-high tide
And nobody wondered why
And nobody wondered why
Oh. All the money in the world I would give it away
What are we doing in the winter
It’s cold and we have no wings to fly away to the sun
We want
Everything
Always
All at once
Moon in the sky, what do you think when you see us crawl
What do you think when you see us
We want
Everything
Always
All at once
